General

Thorn Finance offers fixed term, variable interest rate secured and unsecured personal and vehicle loans, including debt consolidation loans. Our loans range between $2,500 and $50,000 (minimum $5,000 for debt consolidation loans) with flexible repayment periods between 12 - 60 months. We lend unsecured and secured loans between $2,500 and $50,000 (minimum $5,000 for debt consolidation loans). Responsible lending criteria, terms and conditions apply.
This is a loan in which the borrower provides a vehicle as security for the loan. If you are unable to meet your loan repayments, we will make every effort to work with you to find a suitable solution. As a last resort, we may need to take the listed security to repay the outstanding loan amount.
This is a loan issued without security.

The Application Process

To complete our online application process, you will need a mobile phone number, email address, a valid NZ Driver Licence or Passport, and your internet banking login credentials. Credit assessment and responsible lending criteria and inquiries will apply to all applications.
Thorn Finance uses an advanced, online technology platform to carry out verification checks online, rather than waiting for you to manually scan and send in documents. During our application process, we will verify your identity, your contact details, your income and expense data, all in real time. In some cases, we may require you to confirm some details with us and provide additional information so that we can complete the verification checks. If we need to complete manual verification checks, the application process will take longer, and you won't receive an answer within 60 seconds of completing your application, as we need somebody to check over the information. Credit assessment and responsible lending criteria and inquiries will apply to all applications.
The initial application process typically takes less than ten minutes. You will need a mobile phone number, email address, a valid NZ Driver Licence or Passport, and your internet banking login credentials. Once you're finished with your application, we will generally be able to either approve, decline or refer your application to one of our lending specialists within 60 seconds of you completing your application (provided all information required is supplied). Yes. We use Credit Sense, Australasia's leading bank statement retrieval service. By logging in to your internet banking through the Credit Sense portal in the application form, this will allow us to retrieve an electronic copy of 90 days of your bank statements. Your credentials are encrypted and are not stored by Credit Sense, or Thorn Finance, and it will not give us access or control to your bank accounts.
If you have been conditionally approved, one of our credit team will need to assess your application and give it a final sign off before approval. In order to do this, we may require additional documentation or further explanation about your circumstances. If needed, a member of our credit team will be in touch with you. You will receive your final decision via email, and if you have been given a final approval, you will be able to continue with the approval process.
Once you've been approved for a Thorn Finance loan, we will send you an email with a link to finalise your loan details (this typically only takes a couple more minutes). After you have submitted that information, you will immediately receive your loan contract in your email inbox for electronic signing. Once you've signed your agreement, we will disburse your loan (see “When will I receive my funds?” for more information).
We know how important it is to get you your funds quickly, and so we will be trying our best to make sure your loan gets to you as soon as possible. If you sign your contract before 3pm, you can expect your funds within the same day. If you sign your contract after 3pm, your funds should arrive the following business day. If you're consolidating debts, we'll settle those directly with your existing finance providers.

Repayments

As part of your loan application, you will let us know how often you'd like to make repayments (weekly, fortnightly or monthly).

From there, we will be able to calculate your regular repayment amount, based on the amount you would like to borrow, the term you would like to borrow over, and the interest rate you qualify for based on your application.

If you miss a payment, you may be charged default fees and/or default interest charges (see the Rates, Fees and Contract Terms page for more information). If we have security over your vehicle, we may have additional rights in some situations.

If you can’t keep up with your payments due to an unforeseen event that causes hardship, for example illness, injury, loss of employment, or the end of a relationship, you can apply for a hardship variation. You should get in touch with us as soon as possible so that we can discuss your options with you.
